What’s your view? Tim Costello in the Sydney Morning Herald 20/7/10.

Please tell me what you think about this article and this issue in general. Why do you think it is of such importance in Australian elections? Why does it divide the nation? Why is it so easy for people with an agenda to sway voters into believing the negative stereotypes of asylum seekers and refugees but so difficult for whole sectors of our community to exhibit compassion towards people coming here from distant lands? Is it to do with our national identity? Are we affronted by the idea that we are not open, democratic, giving people? Are we racist? Or is it that we simply do not fully understand the issue? Are we victims of biased reporting?
